Founder's Square Has Never Had a Restaurant. Babcock Ranch Is About to Fix That.

Walk through Founder's Square on a Sunday morning and you will find neighbors filling reusable bags with local produce, kids weaving between food truck lines, and someone's dog stealing shade under the bandstand. What you will not find, on that Sunday or any other day of the week, is a restaurant you can walk into and sit down. Babcock Ranch built its town square as a gathering place first. The kitchens came later, and mostly somewhere else.

That gap has shaped daily life here for five years. If you wanted a sit-down meal on a Tuesday night, you got in the car and drove to Crescent B Commons or the Shoppes at Yellow Pine, a few minutes away by golf cart or car but a world apart in feel from the plaza where the town actually gathers. B Street, now rising on Lake Babcock Drive directly across from the Discovery Center and Lee Health, is the first project designed to close that distance for good.

Why the Square Was Built Without a Kitchen

Founder's Square was never zoned to compete with a strip mall. It is Babcock Ranch's civic stage, the spot where the Local Roots Farmers Market sets up every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where Food Truck Fridays bring a rotating lineup of trailers alongside live sets at the Bandstand, and where the town threw its first Babcock Ranch Food & Music Festival this past March, a reggae-and-roots-heavy weekend built around local vendors and free admission.

That is a lot of activity for one plaza, and none of it required a permanent commercial kitchen. The actual sit-down dining, the kind with a lease and a walk-in freezer, went to the retail centers built for it: Crescent B Commons, anchored by the Publix that opened in 2021, and the newer Shoppes at Yellow Pine, which filled out with Sunshine Ace Hardware, HomeGoods, Marshalls, Five Below and Ulta Beauty. Useful, but built around parking lots, not porches.

The Chain Wave Filled the Gap, But Didn't Close It

As Babcock Ranch's population climbed past the 13,000 to 15,000 range by the end of 2025, national chains showed up the way they always do once a town crosses a rooftop threshold. Five Guys, Papa Johns, Jersey Mike's, Yummy Express, Panera Bread and Carvel all opened in the same window, giving residents fast, familiar options within a short drive.

Those openings solved the convenience problem. They did not solve the atmosphere problem. None of them sit in a walkable district built for lingering, and none of them were built to anchor a night out the way a restaurant with a bar and a patio can. Around the same time B Street's retail buildings started coming out of the ground, Oar & Iron Raw Bar & Grill was announced for the Shoppes at Yellow Pine area, described by local reporting as the town's first real entry into fine dining. That signal suggested residents were ready for more than a drive-thru well before B Street had a single tenant move in.

What's Actually Rising on Lake Babcock Drive

B Street is not another shopping center bolted onto the edge of town. It sits inside WestTown, directly across from Founder's Square, and it is being built as the missing piece between the plaza where people already gather and the sit-down meal they currently have to drive for. The project totals roughly 111,000 square feet across ten retail buildings, a 42,000-square-foot office building, and residential units meant to put homes, shops and restaurants on the same block.

The tenant list, confirmed through signed leases as of early this year, reads nothing like the chain wave that came before it:

  • Kong Fu Ramen, a noodle bar
  • Mangiamo Italian Restaurant
  • BBQ King Smokehouse & Tavern
  • Carondelet Drink Parlor, a craft cocktail bar
  • Flourish and Pops, selling popcorn, Italian sodas and boutique gifts
  • Wholistic Motus, a physical therapy studio
  • Sugaring LA, an organic body sugaring studio
  • Blush Nail Lounge
  • Studio B Pilates and Three Oaks Wellness
  • NV Realty Group and South Florida Title Insurers, filling out the professional side of the district

Matt Buehler, senior vice president overseeing the project for Kitson & Partners, put the intent plainly when the tenant roster was announced: this new commercial area will bring much-needed additional retail and dining experiences to Babcock Ranch, with a mix of national and local brands to round out what the town already offers. The list itself tells you which side of that mix B Street leans toward.

The Timeline Keeps Moving, Here's What's Confirmed

B Street's opening date has shifted more than once as construction milestones landed. The most recent confirmed update, from Kitson & Partners' own communications team in January of this year, lays out the sequence:

  1. Vertical construction on the district's office building and surrounding structures began in mid-2025.
  2. Above-ground construction on the retail buildings began this past January, according to Tyler Kitson, senior vice president of communities at Kitson & Partners.
  3. Tenant buildouts and interior work were expected to follow through the spring.
  4. The district is now expected to welcome customers by the end of this year, with many tenants scheduled to open in time for the holiday season.

That timeline has moved from an original first-quarter target to a year-end one as the project cleared each phase, which is normal for a build of this scale but worth knowing if you have been watching for an opening date and wondering why it keeps sliding.

It's Not Just Restaurants

B Street gets most of the attention, but it was not the only commercial milestone Babcock Ranch hit this year. This past May, the town held a public preview celebration for Curry Commerce Center, a 255,000-square-foot flex and light-industrial facility on Curry Preserve Drive, just south of Cypress Parkway. The event drew close to 400 prospective business owners and residents, and the early tenant list is a reminder that not everything a growing town needs shows up as a restaurant. Concord Pools, Solar City Carts and Sweet Science Boxing Fitness, all resident-owned businesses, are among the first to move in, giving local operators actual commercial space instead of running out of a truck or a garage.

Between B Street and Curry Commerce Center, Babcock Ranch is filling in two very different kinds of gaps at once. One is where you eat and gather. The other is where the people who fix your pool, sell you a golf cart or teach you to box actually run their businesses.

What Doesn't Change This Fall

None of this touches the rituals that already define a weekend here. The Local Roots Farmers Market still runs every Sunday at Founder's Square, and the Farm Stand Market at Explorers Park still fills Saturday and Sunday mornings with local produce. Food Truck Fridays and Bandstand performances continue on their usual schedule, and if this spring's Food & Music Festival is any indication, expect the town to keep adding free, outdoor, music-driven events to that calendar rather than replacing what already works.

What changes is what happens after the market closes or the last food truck pulls away. For five years, that has meant getting in the car. By the end of this year, if the current timeline holds, it will mean walking across the street instead.
